When you interchange an engine or determine other long engine occupation on your Passat, sometimes items alike the coolant recovery vat can sustain damage. Remove the Coolant Expansion Tank
1. Turn off the engine and let it cool for at least an hour. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Loosen the drain plug on the radiator and drain the coolant into a drip pan below the coolant expansion tank hose location. Affix the radiator drain plug and pour the used coolant out of the drip pan into a tightly sealed container for proper disposal.
3. Un-clamp the tank from its location, clamp and disconnect the hose. Wipe up any spilled coolant completely and empty any leftover coolant into the same container. Dispose of this coolant immediately.
Fill the tank to the cold fill line with approved pre-mixed coolant. Recap tightly and wipe up any spills.7.
Be sure this connection is secure to avoid new leaks.

4. Connect the new coolant expansion tank hose to the radiator.Replace the negative battery cable and start engine. Check for leaks in the cooling system, paying special attention to the radiator connecting hose.
