Alternate the brake pads and brake calipers in your vehicle.
The brake calipers and brake pads on your 1998 Volkswagen make up a large part of your vehicle's braking system. If the brake calipers or brake pads become worn or damaged, it can cause a significant reduction in the performance of your brakes. This is a serious problem not just for yourself but for everyone else on the road. To avoid this you should look to regularly maintain and replace your brake caliper and pads in order to keep your braking system at its optimum performance.
Instructions
1. Place the car jack underneath the Volkswagen. The jack should be slightly off center, closer to the wheel which you are looking to carry out the work on. Support the car jack with the use of jack stands.
2. Use a lug wrench to remove the lug nuts off the wheel. Lift the wheel away from the axle and place in a safe location for reattachment once the work is complete.
3. Move the caliper carefully out of the way to gain access to the brake pads.4. Remove the brake pads from the wheel. One of the brake pads will have a sensor attached to it. Locate the brake caliper and use a wrench to remove the two mounting bolts which hold it in place. Follow the electrical wiring on the caliper and disconnect the electrical connector. This will allow you to remove the caliper.
Use a flat-head screwdriver to open up the sensor attachment and disconnect it from the pad. Remove both of the pads from the vehicle and discard in the trash.
5. To install the new brake pads and new caliper simply follow the removal steps in reverse. Once the work is complete take the Volkswagen down off the car jack. Take your vehicle out on the secluded road to test that the new caliper and brake pads work correctly.
