Execute A Leak Lower Test On The Large Block Chevrolet Engine

Leak down attempt a commodious block Chevy to actuate its overall dispute.

Assessing the dispute of the rings, pistons, valves and tendency gaskets within an engine can end its overall instance. How fine these parts build and continue cylinder strength can present if they hold change into excessively worn or provided parts bear failed and wish replacement. Although time-consuming, a leak down trial is the chief conduct to perform this Category of assessment on a colossal block Chevy further as any car engine.

Instructions

1. Flying start the engine and authorize it to flight for five minutes to roasting it up and avow all the internal parts to arrive natural operating temperatures to build the most accurate leak down reading.

2. Remove all the Glimmer plugs from the engine using a socket wrench and Glimmer plug socket.

3. Bring the cylinder to be tested up to top dead centre by using a breaker bar with a socket to turn the crankshaft pulley and procedure the piston up in its cylinder. If bubbles are seen when the radiator cap is removed, a leaking head gasket is present. Air heard coming from the oil filler cap or dipstick tube indicates worn or broken rings or a faulty piston.

Screw the adapter into the spark plug hole. Attach the compressor hose onto the metal compressor hose fitting on the leak down tester and set the left-hand leak down pressure gauge to 100 psi.

5. Observe the reading on the right-hand gauge of the leak down tester. The reading will indicate how much pressure leakage is occurring in the cylinder. If the gauge reads 90 psi, that means that the cylinder is losing 10 percent of its pressure, 80 psi indicates a 20 percent loss, and so on for different readings.

6. Determine if a severe pressure loss is present by observing the leak down reading and noting if it exceeds a maximum of 15 percent. If air is heard hissing from the tailpipe, this indicates a leaking exhaust valve. If air is heard coming out of the intake manifold, this means you have a leaking intake valve. The piston is at top dead center when it stops moving up and just begins to move downwards, and both valves are closed.4. Locate the appropriate-sized spark plug adapter and attach it to the testing hose on the leak down tester.
