How's Vehicle Vinyl Made

Vinyl vehivle decals are made from plastic.

Van vinyl creation uses two seperate processes, moulding two contrary grades of motorcar vinyl. Hurl vinyl offers less shrinkage, is thinner and else durable than calendered. Calendered is cheaper to produce and not a good choice for car vinyl applications.

Plastics

Polyvinylchloride is also known as PVC.

Car vinyl is made from a polyvinylchloride polymer, a frequently manufactured plastic substance that can be melted and shaped. Polyvinylchloride is widely used in a variety of plastic products. Tough and pliable, polyvinylchloride is one of the raw materials used for vinyl car decals.

Other Ingredients

Vinyl car film is made to bend.

Plasticizers are added to make the vinyl flexible. Pigment is then added to the polymer because polyvinylchloride is typically clear with a bluish cast. Other additives and fillers are incorporated to protect from UV rays and other vinyl-destroying materials. The cast method used to create a higher grade of vinyl, offering better flexibility for installation on cars than the calendered method. In cast vinyl, raw materials are mixed in a predetermined order, speed and time forming a liquid mixture, organosol. It is poured onto a casting sheet, which is baked, removing solvents. An adhesive coating is applied to the solid film.

Quality determines the vinyl durability.

Cast Vinyl

Cast vinyl is considered high performance.

Calendered Vinyl

Steel rollers compress the polymer into sheets.

Calendered, or intermediate vinyl, is formed without solvents. The vinyl is mixed and heated to a molten state and is fed through a die. The vinyl passes through polished steel rolls, flattening the vinyl.
