Adjust The Engine Timing Having A Timing Light

An engine must be fair timed in line for it to gallop properly.

Instructions

3. Locate the crankshaft pulley. This is typically located underneath the timing belt cover, near the bottom of the engine block. Locate the notch on the crankshaft pulley and mark it with white chalk, so that it will be easier to see later.


4. Start the engine and let it run until the dash thermometer reaches the usual running temperature. Start the engine and aim the timing light at the white mark you made in step three. The flashing light from the timing light should flash exactly when the white notch comes around each time.8.



6. Connect the timing light. The light will have three leads. The positive lead goes on the positive battery terminal, and the negative lead on the negative battery terminal. Connect the third lead to the spark plug wire for the spark plug in the number one cylinder.


7. On most vehicles, this will be when the gauge is at or a little under midway between cold and overheated. When running temperature is reached, shut off the engine.5. Using a distributor wrench, loosen the distributor.


Adjust the distributor slightly by moving it forward or backward in very small amounts until the white mark is perfectly in time with the flashing lights.


9. Carefully tighten the distributor bolt, ensuring it does not shift. If the distributor shifts when the bolt is tightened, you will have to re-time the engine.


10. Shut off the engine and replace the timing belt cover and the serpentine belt. Move the nut on the tensioner pulley clockwise to apply tension to the belt.
