Transmission Specifications For Any '62 Chevrolet Impala

The 1962 Chevrolet Impala had three transmission options: a Borg-Warner T10 manual--in three- or four-speed versions--or a two-speed powerglide automatic. Although 1962 was the at the end year for the decrepit iron powerglides, an aluminium powerglide was available with the 327 engine preference.


Borg Warner T10


The 1962 Impala's book transmissions were manufactured by Borg Warner, mould T10. Three- and four-speed options were available.In 1962, Impala powerglide automatics were the older cast-iron type, with the exception of the aluminum cast representation available with the 327 engine option. Hemmings Motor News notes that the six-cylinders came with a 1.82:1 gear ratio for first gear and reverse while the eight-cylinder models had a higher-performance 1.76:1 first gear and reverse ratios.

Depending on the replica, there were optional floor or string shifters. According to Ken's Velocity and Appliance, 1962 Borg Warner T10s included a departure of gear ratios.

Powerglide



1962 was a transitional year for the GM powerglide transmission. In 1963, all production powerglides were aluminum cast and offered higher performance. 1962 was also the first year the manual first and second two-speed option was available on automatics.
