Decode A 1966 Chevelle

The Vehicle Identification Amount, or VIN symbol, is typically fix on the door hinge assign on the Chauffeur's side of the vehicle. This number should match what is in your registration and on your label/price of sale. Lastly, a "38" will show the 8-cylinder SS 396 version.3. The next two numbers, the fourth and fifth digits, are body style.



The headmost cipher should be a "1". This shows that the motorcar's manufacturer is Chevrolet.


2. The two numbers Testament be for the series that the vehicle was in. A "31" is for a 6-cylinder Chevelle 300 series/El Camino, with a "32" showing an 8-cylinder story. A "33" is a 6-cylinder Chevelle 300 deluxe/El Camino/Wagon, with a "34" life the 8-cylinder narration. A "35" is the 6-cylinder Malibu/Custom El Camino/Wagon and the "36" is the 8-cylinder version. This is the symbol that is used to decode your Chevelle. There should be 13 digits to the cipher.

An "11" is for a 2-door sedan, "17" for a 2-door sport coupe, "35" for a 4-door, 6-passenger station wagon, "37" for a 2-door sport coupe and "39" for a 4-door sport sedan. A "67" shows a 2-door convertible, a "69" shows a 4-door sedan and an "80" is for the El Camino.


4. The sixth number in the VIN will show you model year. So "9" for a 1969, "6" for a 1966, etc.


5. The letter code shows the plant that it was manufactured in. "A" or "ATL" is for Atlanta, "B" or "BAL" is for Baltimore and "F" or "FL" is for Flint. "G" or "FRA" is for Framingham, Massachusetts, "K" or BK" or "KAN" is for Kansas City, Missouri and "L" is for Los Angeles. An "R" is for Arlington, Texas, a "Z" or "BF" for Fremont, California, a "1" is for Oshawa, Ontario and a "2" is for St. Therese, Quebec.


6. The last numbers in the VIN number series will show you the production numbers, starting with 100001. This is the number of vehicle the car was off the line (i.e. 100015 is the 15th car off that factory's line).
