Trobleshoot and fix 1992 Honda Prelude Launch Problems

The 1992 Honda Prelude 2.2-liter engine is a fuel-injected engine. While depart up problems are related to the three better functions -- fuel, ignition and starting transaction, equitable close a carbureted vehicle, diagnosis is a bit else burdensome, owing to a fuel-injected vehicle uses sensors and a personal computer to flight the fuel and ignition systems. Instructions


1. Pull one of the spark plug wires off a spark plug. Stick the new, extra spark plug into the end of the wire. Lay the plug on a metal part of the engine, but make sure that metal is not aluminum. A bolt or a bracket will suffice. Have the helper crank the engine over while you watch the spark plug. If you do not see spark, the ignition system, including the switch, key tumbler, coil and distributor must be diagnosed. If you see a spark, you have ignition, and should move onto the next step.


2. Locate the fuel rail. Remove the cap from the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Place rags under the Schrader valve. Replace the Schrader cap and move onto the next step.3. Remove the oil cap on the valve cover. Look inside to see if you can see the camshaft. Press the valve stem in, then have the helper crank the engine over. If fuel just dribbles out or shoots up in the air only a few inches, the Prelude has a fuel delivery problem, and the system must be diagnosed, including the fuel pump, wiring and fuel pump relay. If fuel shoots straight up into the air, tell the helper to stop cranking the engine. Fuel delivery is not the problem.


If you see a flat piece of metal, your particular Prelude engine uses a baffle, and you must remove the timing cover to check the timing belt. Simply unbolt the top bolts in the timing cover and pull it away from the engine enough to watch the timing belt. Have the helper crank the engine over. If you can see the camshaft moving through the oil-fill orifice or if you can see the timing belt move under the timing cover, the timing belt is not broken, and you can move onto the next step. If the belt is broken, replace the timing belt.


4. Plug the code scanner into the data link port connector under the dash and to the left of the steering column. Press the "Read" button. Record the codes, then match them with the codes on the code sheet that comes with the scanner. Repair as necessary. Plug the code scanner in again, then press the "Erase" button to erase the codes.
