Repair The Exhaust Manifold And Header Inside A 1996 Jeep

The exhaust manifold, or header, in the 1996 Jeep Cherokee 2.8-liter engine infrequently needs to be replaced -- normally the gasket is the culprit of an exhaust leak -- on the contrary provided it does warp or crack, you Testament corner to alter it. Depending on how defective the leak is between the purpose and the manifold, you may hear a ticking Clamour that gets faster with higher engine rpm, or you may hear a buzzing sound.

Instructions

Left Side

1. Loosen the clamps on the air duct, using the screwdriver. Pull the duct off the air cleaner box, then remove the air cleaner box using the appropriate socket. Remove the air injection hose and its manifold, if equipped, using the appropriate socket.

2. Slide a socket onto the tensioner pulley, then rotate the pulley toward the center of the engine. Lift the belt off the power steering pump. Unbolt the power steering pump bracket, using the appropriate socket. Remove the air supply pipes from the manifold, using the appropriate socket. Remove the Pulsair bracket bolt from the valve cover, if equipped, then remove the pipe assembly, using the appropriate socket. Remove the manifold's retaining bolts and lift the manifold out of the engine.

Remove the exhaust pipe at the manifold, using the appropriate socket. Unbolt the exhaust manifold from the head and remove the manifold and gasket.

4. Clean the gasket-mating surface of the head. Install the new manifold, using a new gasket. Tighten the retaining bolts finger tight. Working from the center to the ends in a circular patter, tighten the bolts to 15 foot-pounds of torque. Starting in the center again, tighten the bolts to 25 foot-pounds of torque.

5. Reconnect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Reinstall the power steering pump and bracket assembly, the belt and the air duct.

Right Side

6. Jack up the vehicle. Remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold, using the appropriate socket. Lower the vehicle, using the floor jack. Number the spark plug wires, using liquid eraser. Remove the spark plug wires from the plugs by gently pulling them off. Remove the cruise control servo from the right inner fender panel, using the appropriate socket.

7. Set the pump and bracket assembly out of the way.3. Raise the vehicle, using the floor jack, then support it with jack stands.

8. Clean the gasket-mounting surface on the head, then position the new manifold and a new gasket against the head. Install the bolts finger tight. Tighten the bolts, starting in the center and working in a circular pattern, to 15 foot-pounds of torque. Starting in the center again, and working in a circular pattern, tighten the bolts to 25 foot-pounds of torque.

9. Reinstall the air supply system and spark plug wires. Reinstall the cruise control servo. Raise the vehicle again and reconnect the exhaust pipe to the manifold. Lower the vehicle off the jack stands.
