Repair A Vehicle Alternator Belt

1. Turn off your car. Do this if you need to go underneath the car to access the tensioner to remove the belt. Inspect your vehicle to see if you can reach the tensioner and the belt without having to go underneath the vehicle. If you can, there is no need to raise the car.


3. Place a 3/8 inch ratchet on the tensioner and push the tensioner clockwise. Hold the tensioner in place to keep the tensioner loosened to remove the belt from around the alternator and pull the belt completely out.


4. Install the new belt on the alternator and the pulleys. To find out replace the belt, you can look for a sticker with the title "Vehicle Emission Control" it should have the belt routing diagram on it to show route the belt. Disconnect your negative battery cable using a socket wrench by removing the nut. The negative cable will be indicated by either a negative (-) sign or will be black in color. Remove the cable.2.


Follow your belt routing diagram to help you place the belt accordingly along the way. Check to see if the belt is routed correctly. Reconnect the battery cables. Start your engine and you're done.
